  1. Hi Sakura,

Would you mind telling me the difference(s) between ¨訪れる(おとずれる)¨ and ¨訪ねる (たずねる)”? Because I commonly read the verb ¨visit¨ with the latter one.

It is very kind of you to share all this precious inforamtion with keen japanese learners. Thanks very much!!

    1. I am sorry for getting back to you so late. As for your question, they are really almost the same. Perhaps 訪れる(おとずれる) has a slightly more poetic nuance as can be seen in a phrase like 春の訪れ “the arrival of spring.”

      I hope this helps.

  2. Sakura san

I have a question I hope you don’t mind answering.
If にほん の おしろ means Japanese Castle, why is Himeji Castle written as ひめじ じょう and not ひめじ おしろ?
Are おしろ and じょう the same thing?
Also thank you very much for making this website!!

    1. I stole this from Wikipedia. But it explains it pretty well:
The character for castle, ‘城’, read as shiro
(its kun’yomi) by itself, is read as jō
(the Chinese-derived on’yomi) when attached to
a word, such as in the name of a particular castle.
Thus, for example, Osaka Castle is called Ōsaka-jō
      (大阪城) in Japanese.”

Also, saying Ōsaka-jō is just easier.

Think of on’yomi as something like Latin or Greek roots in English. For example you have the Latin derived word (comprehend) and the Germanic word (understand). In Japanese, similarly we have (理解する rikai suru) and (わかる).
