そうですね、もう少し変えるとすれば、
「自分でも、いつか日本語が話せるようになるとは考えた事がなかった。」
という言い方が出来ますね。
is it really the case that 人と when spoken fast can simply be 人 without the と?
I don’t think so. I can’t really think of a situation where you could leave the と out.
