Dansei wa choko wo morau dake de wa naku, san gatsu jyuyokka ni choko wo moratta josei ni okaeshi wo shimasu. San gatsu jyuyokka wa howaito dei to yobarete imasu.

2月14日はバレンタインデーです。日本のバレンタインデーは他の国と少し違って、女性が男性にチョコレートをあげる日です。恋人同士であれば、デートに出かけた際に女性からチョコレートと一緒に何か違うものもプレゼントします。

恋人だけではなく、奥さんは旦那さんに渡します。職場の男性の同僚や上司に渡すこともあります。学校の生徒が男性の先生に渡すこともあります。恋人や好きな人じゃない人にあげるチョコを義理チョコと呼びます。なので、2月14日の前は、チョコレート売り場にたくさんの女性が旦那さんや恋人にあげるチョコ、義理チョコを買いにやって来ます。

男性はチョコをもらうだけではなく、3月14日にチョコをもらった女性にお返しをします。3月14日はホワイトデーと呼ばれています。

Valentine’s Day & White Day

February 14th is Valentine’s Day in Japan. Valentine’s Day in Japan is a little different from other countries in that it is a day for women to give chocolates to men. For lovers, when they go out on a date, the woman gives something different along with the chocolate.

Not only between lovers, wives give chocolates to their husbands as well. Sometimes women give them to their male colleagues or bosses at work. Sometimes students at school give gifts to their male teachers. Chocolates given to someone who is not your girlfriend or your favorite person are called ‘giri-choco’. So, before February 14th, many women come to the chocolate shops to buy chocolates for their husbands or lovers, or giri-choco.

Men not only receive chocolate, but also give it back to the women who gave it to them on March 14; March 14 is known as White Day.
