the women who dive down in the sea and fish for shellfish and seaweed うみ に もぐり かいるい や かいそう の りょう （ りょう ） を する じょせい
we call ‘ama’ あま （ あま ） と よび ます
Every day the women fish, free diving かのじょ たち は まいにち すもぐり で りょう を します
as for that method of fishing この ぎょほう （ ぎょ ほう ） は
has become (a part of) the cultural life of Japan にほん の せいかつ ぶんか に なっています
there are about 2000 women divers in the whole country ぜんこく に 2000 にん ほど の あま さん が います
among those その なか で
the most numerous prefecture is Mie Prefecture いちばん おおい けん は みえ けん で
in the Ise-Shima district いせ しま ちいき には
1300 women divers are active せんさんびゃく にん の あま さん が かつやく しています
the average age of active amasan is 60 and… げんえき の あま さん の へいきん ねんれい は 60さい で
even at 60 they are called the backbone (or mainstay) 60 さい でも ちゅうけん と いわ れています

we often see the star shape and grid shape marks ほし がた や こうし じょう （ こう し じ ょう ） の しるし を よく みかけます
