ほしい ・ V-たい

① Wanting things — N が ほしい

Use ほしい when you want a thing (a noun). It works like an い-adjective and conjugates the same way.

N が ほしい(です)
I want [noun] / Do you want [noun]?

Form Affirmative Negative
Non-past ほしい(です) ほしくない(です)
Past ほしかった(です) ほしくなかった(です)

CDが ほしいです。
I want a CD.
くるまが ほしくないです。
I don’t want a car.
新しいパソコンが ほしかったです。
I wanted a new computer.

② Wanting to do things — V-たい

Use V-たい when you want to do something (a verb). It is formed by taking the V-pre masu stem and adding たい. The result conjugates exactly like an い-adjective.

How to find the V-pre masu stem: Take the ます form of the verb and remove ます.

add たい
いきたい

More examples: たべます → たべ → たべたい   します → し → したい   きます → き → きたい

Non-past 〜たい(です) 〜たくない(です)
Past 〜たかった(です) 〜たくなかった(です)

CDが/を かいたいです。
I want to buy a CD.
本は かいたくないです。
I don’t want to buy a book.
北海道へ 行きたいです。
I want to go to Hokkaido.
べんきょうしたくなかったです。
I didn’t want to study.

💡 Particle note: The object of V-たい can be marked with either が or を. When the object is the sentence topic, use は instead.
e.g.  コーラが/を 飲みたいです。 / コーラは 飲みたくないです。
