例えば、をはとと数えます。ですが、それをと数えます。また、をでとと数えます。それをさらにが（ひとかたまり）というで一塊（ひところ）と数えます。さらにそれがスーパーでと、ことから一冊と数え、にそれが人のはとなります。

Tatoeba, umi no naka de oyogu ide iru maguro wo kazoeru toki wa hoka no sakana to onaji yō ni ippiki, nihiki to kazoemasu. Desuga, sore wo tsuru ageru to ippon, nihon to kazoemasu. Mata, tsutta sakana wo shijō de kiriwakeru to icchō to kazoemasu. Sore wo sara ni kiriwaketa mono ga hitokatamari toiu imi de ichi hitokoro to kazoemasu. Sara ni sore ga sūpā de pakku tsumesareru to, tanzaku ni nirute iru koto kara issatsu to kazoe, saigo ni sore ga hito no kuchi ni hairu toki wa hitokire to narimasu.

実は日本人でもわからない日本語や知らない日本語のルールがたくさんあります。私たち日本人は生活の中で使われている言葉の意味を知らないまま使っている事もあります。例えば、マグロの数え方。マグロの数え方は状態や形によって数え方が何通りもあるのです。

例えば、海の中で泳いでいるマグロを数える時は他の魚と同じように一匹、二匹と数えます。ですが、それを釣り上げると一本、二本と数えます。また、釣った魚を市場で切り分けると一丁と数えます。それをさらに切り分けたものが一塊（ひとかたまり）という意味で一塊（ひところ）と数えます。さらにそれがスーパーでパック詰めされると、短冊に似ていることから一冊と数え、最後にそれが人の口に入る時は一切れとなります。

In fact, there are many Japanese words and rules that even Japanese people do not understand. We Japanese sometimes use words in our daily lives without knowing what they mean. For example, how to count tuna. There are several ways to count tuna depending on its condition and shape.

For example, when you count tuna swimming in the sea, you count them as “ippiki”, “nihiki” like other fish. But when you catch one, you count it as “ippon”, “nihon”. When the fish is cut into pieces at the market, it is counted as “icchou”. When the fish is further cut into pieces, it is counted as “hitokoro”, which means one lump. When the fish is packed in a supermarket, it is counted as “issatsu” because it resembles a “tanzaku” (a narrow strip of paper on which Japanese poems are written), and finally, when it enters the mouth, it is counted as “hitokiri” (a small slice).
