Differences between Kanto and Kansai (Language Version)
日本には様々な方言があります。
Nihon ni wa samazama na hōgen ga arimasu.
There are various dialects in Japan.
関東と関西でも、違った意味をもつ言葉があります。
Kantō to Kansai demo, chigatta imi o motsu kotoba ga arimasu.
Even in the Kanto and Kansai regions, there are words that have different meanings.
皆さんは「シャベル」「スコップ」と聞いて、どんな大きさの道具を思い浮かべますか？
Minasan wa ‘shaberu’ ‘sukoppu’ to kiite, don’na ōki-sa no dōgu o omoiukabemasu ka?
When you hear the words “shaberu” and “sukoppu”, what size tool comes to mind?
関東では、大きいほうを「スコップ」、砂遊びやガーデニングに使う小さいものを、「シャベル(またはショベル)」と呼びます。
Kantō de wa, ōkī hō o ‘sukoppu’, sunaasobi ya gādeningu ni tsukau chīsai mono o, ‘shaberu’ (mata wa shoberu) to yobimasu.
In the Kanto region, the larger shovel is called a “sukoppu” and the smaller one used for playing in the sand or gardening is called a “shaberu”.
しかし、関西では真逆になります。
Shikashi, Kansai de wa magyaku ni narimasu.
In the Kansai region, however, the opposite is true.
次に、壁にカレンダーなどを留めるものを、関東では「画鋲」と呼びます。
Tsugi ni, kabe ni karendā nado o todomeru mono o, Kantō de wa ‘gabyō’ to yobimasu.
Next, the things we use to fasten calendars and other items to walls are called “gabyō” in the Kanto region.
一方、関西では「押しピン」と呼ぶことが多いです。
Ippō, Kansai de wa ‘oshipin’ to yobu koto ga ōi desu.
In the Kansai region, on the other hand, they are often called “oshipin”.
また、「カッターシャツ」という言葉は、関西だけで使われ、関東では「ワイシャツ」と呼びます。
Mata,’kattāshatsu’ to iu kotoba wa, Kansai dake de tsukaware, Kantō de wa ‘waishatsu’ to yobimasu.
Also, the term “kattāshatsu” is used only in the Kansai region, while in the Kanto region it is called a “waishatsu”.
関東で「カッター」と言えば「カッターナイフ」のことです。
Kantō de ‘kattā’ to ieba ‘kattānaifu’ no koto desu.
In Kanto, if you say the word “kattā” it refers to a “box cutter”.
最後に面白いエピソードをご紹介します。
Saigo ni omoshiroi episōdo o goshōkai shimasu.
Finally, here is an interesting episode.
関西出身の先生が、関東の学校で「机をなおしてください」と言いました。
Kansai shusshin no sensei ga, Kantō no gakkō de ‘tsukue o naoshite kudasai’ to iimashita.
A teacher from the Kansai region asked his students to clear off their desks at a school in the Kanto region.
すると、生徒たちは「机を修理してください」という意味だと思い、戸惑ってしまいました。
Suruto, seito-tachi wa ‘tsukue o shūri shite kudasai’ to iu imi da to omoi, tomadotte shimaimashita.
The students thought he meant “please repair your desk,” and were perplexed.
片付けることを「なおす」と言うのは、関西だけなのですね。
Katadzukeru koto o ‘naosu’ to iu no wa, Kansai dake na no desu ne.
It is only in Kansai that the word “naosu” meaning “to mend” is used to mean “to tidy up”.
